Notes from the Director

Welcome back! I hope everyone is settling in to our new school year, and you are excited about what you’ll accomplish this year in all aspects of your life. Our band camp was excellent, and we have a little over half of the first movement, “Spring,” learned and on the field already. The work ethic, attitude, and determination of the students made all of that possible. I want to especially thank our student leaders and staff for all the work preparing for the student members and for doing the bulk of the teaching. We are going to have a great fall season!


Please note that students in Marching Band meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings until November 23rd. We also have a few Saturday rehearsals scheduled, the first being this Saturday. All rehearsals are part of our course, with regular attendance kept for school records. We need all students to attend rehearsals so that every student can be successful in this activity where we depend on each other for our ultimate success. 

There may be some very hot days in the coming weeks. Our school district has heat procedures to make sure that students remain healthy while participating in outdoor activities. The Los Altos Conqueror Bands & Color Guard exceeds these guidelines, and we have implemented new procedures this year where students receive a 3 minute water and rest break every 12-15 minutes of the rehearsal. This allows them to stay fresh and hydrated while working outside. Please also remember that temperatures are quite different by 5 PM than the hottest temperatures of the day. Once the sun dips behind the hills, at least an hour before sunset, the temperatures drop dramatically in the stadium. Rest assured if temperatures are so high that it is not productive to have our students outside at the beginning of rehearsal, we will move the rehearsal indoors until the temperature reaches cooler temperatures. Rehearsals would only be canceled in a truly extraordinary situation since we can work indoors during our scheduled rehearsal time. 


The Los Altos Band Boosters is the parent organization that is a non-profit corporation charged with supporting the student members of the band and color guard. All parents are automatically members of this organization. On August 2nd, we held a meeting for the parents and hosted a family BBQ while the students performed what they had learned this summer. The Band Boosters have quarterly meetings, at a minimum, where parents can get information and provide feedback on the direction of the Boosters. At the meeting, the parents approved the 2019-2020 annual Booster budget of $75,000. This budget pays for everything the school district does not cover: instructional staff, taxes, insurance, competition entry fees, equipment, student awards, and much more. The Band Boosters launched a campaign of the Family Donation at the meeting. Each family is requested to participate in the Family Donation campaign by helping the Band Boosters reach donation goals that are a large part of the adopted budget. Families who are able to contribute the suggested Family Donation of $250 at once are encouraged to get that in to the Band Office as soon as possible. The Band Boosters understand that all families may not be able to do this one-time Family Donation at this time, so they suggest that a $50 donation be made by August 15th, and then make a small donation of $25 each month, by the 15th,  for the rest of the school year. If you would like a coupon book to keep track of your donations, the Band Boosters are happy to provide that for you. Remember that this is one of our major revenue streams for supporting the students, and without your participation we will need to reevaluate what we are able to do for the students.
